Why People Ignore Warnings

Why do people ignore warnings on products such as alcohol, glue, and cigarettes? The answer is connected to how they weigh benefits and risks when making a decision, according to Prof. Lehto of Purdue University. He claims that if people perceive a benefit in not following a certain safety rule or warning, they are likely to ignore the rule or disregard the warning. Similar results were found in a recent study which showed that Americans ignored warnings issued by the Federal Service in February 2008, when 82 tornadoes struck the country.

What could be possible results of ignoring these kinds of warnings?

Response:

damage to people's health

increased awareness of the dangers

increased chances of death
