Question:

Multiple choice question

Offset means to counter or cancel out the effect of something. To offset a problem does not mean to make it go away.

For example, when astronauts go into space, the lack of gravity can make their muscles get weak. What do astronauts do to offset this effect? They do extra exercise to keep their muscles strong. Exercising in space does not create gravity - the problem does not go away, but its effects are reduced.

Read this paragraph and answer the question below.

The shield cancels the effect of the heat so that it does not burn the shuttle.

The heat is still there, but the shield offsets the effect of the heat.

The shield makes the heat go away.

Why Do Space Shuttles Need Shields?

You may know that a space shuttle has a special shield that stops the shuttle from burning up when it comes back to earth. Why? Because the space shuttle is moving very fast. When it comes back to earth, it hits air (there is no air in space). When the shuttle moves so fast against the air, the temperature gets VERY hot, and the shuttle would burn if there were no shields to offset the effects of high temperatures. One of the reasons why the Columbia space ship was destroyed was because part of the shield was damaged when the ship was launched.
