Why Do Space Shuttles Need Shields?

You may know that a space shuttle has a special shield that stops the shuttle from burning up when it comes back to earth. Why? Because the space shuttle is moving very fast. When it comes back to earth, it hits air (there is no air in space). When the shuttle moves so fast against the air, the temperature gets VERY hot, and the shuttle would burn if there were no shields to offset the effects of high temperatures. One of the reasons why the Columbia space ship was destroyed was because part of the shield was damaged when the ship was launched.
