Towards academic reading

Categories do much more than simply help the human mind to put things in order. Because categories help us to sort things in a logical way, grouping things into categories can help you understand more about those things.

Deciding whether or not things belong in a specific category makes you answer questions such as:

What is this?

If it belongs in this category, then what do I already know about this?

What does this have in common with other things in the same category?

How is this different from other things in the same category?

Asking these questions helps you to think about and remember information.

Read this paragraph and answer the question below.

How Categories Can Help You Remember Information

History teachers know that sorting things into categories can help you remember information. For example, if you have to remember the causes and results of the French Revolution, you could try to sort all the major causes of the revolution into economic, social and religious causes. Then decide which categories you could use to group the results of the revolution.

Next time you have to remember causes and results of something, check if sorting them into categories helps you to remember the information you are trying to learn.

Why do you think sorting things into categories can help you remember information?

Choose the 2 correct answers.

Choosing categories and then sorting information into categories makes you think more carefully about the information you are trying to remember.

A lot of separate facts and small bits of information are harder to remember than "chunks" of information sorted into categories.

Categories make things easier to sort things into groups.
