compensate

Compensation means something that comes instead of another thing which is usually negative.

For example:

When I went to London, the airline company lost my bag. They gave me $400 as compensation, but this was not enough to replace everything in my bag.

My neighbor gave me $1000 as compensation for accidentally killing my cat, but I did not want his money. Nothing could ever compensate me for losing the cat I loved.
