Changes in Families

During the first half of the 20th century, the nuclear family - comprised of the mother, father and their children - was still the most common form of family unit. The mother was usually a full-time housewife and the father was the money earner. After the 1960’s, however, this form of the traditional family began to change. Families began to have fewer children, more women went to work, and the divorce rate went up. As a result of these changes, families today look very different. There are many single-parent families. Second marriages for one or both of the parents are common and often result in “my children, your children, and our children” combinations.
