To confirm a hypothesis, we need scientific evidence. In order to get enough evidence to confirm their hypotheses, researchers who want to prove something must conduct their research according to accepted rules and procedures. These rules inform researchers how to choose who will take part in their study, how to collect data and how to analyze the data they collect.

If researchers don't follow these rules, we cannot accept their results as scientific evidence.
