Researchers have tried to explain how cooperative behavior evolves in human and animal populations. Penguins are a good example of this behavior. They live in extremely cold environments, where temperatures can reach -76°F (-60°C). To escape the wind and stay warm, penguins stand together to protect their eggs and survive the cold. Each penguin takes turns getting warm by spending time near the warm center of the circle. After they have warmed up a bit, they will move from the center to the edge of the group so that others can enjoy protection from the wind.
