Towards academic reading

Effective guidelines are clear, contain specific details, and are easy to understand.

Read this paragraph and answer the question below.

Improving School Guidelines

Schools provide health and safety guidelines for students. Here is one school’s set of guidelines:

Guideline #1: Students with a fever must not come to school.
Guideline #2: Students with medical problems must bring a doctor’s letter that describes their problem.
Guideline #3: Students must have all their immunization shots updated.

Last year, many children got sick because one boy came to school with no fever, even though he still had a fever the night before. In addition, one girl was sent to hospital during a school trip because her teachers did not realize that she was not allowed to climb hills.

What revisions would you make to the above guidelines in order to create a new improved set of guidelines? Choose 2 correct answers.

In Guideline # 1, remove the words 'with a fever'. Then, after the word 'school', add the words 'until they have not had a fever for over 24 hours.'

In Guideline # 2, add the words 'and explains in which activities the student is not allowed to participate.'

Delete guideline #3.
