Why People Ignore Warnings
Why do people ignore warnings on products such as alcohol, glue, and cigarettes? The answer is connected to how they weigh benefits and risks when making a decision, according to Prof. Lehto of Purdue University. He claims that if people perceive a benefit in not following a certain safety rule or warning, they are likely to ignore the rule or disregard the warning. Similar results were found in a recent study which showed that Americans ignored warnings issued by the Federal Service in February 2008, when 82 tornadoes struck the country.
