Textbooks and Illustrations

In the 1970's researchers began to investigate the effects of illustrated textbooks on learner performance. Most studies compared two groups: a group that read a text only and a group that read a text accompanied by illustrations. Both groups then answered the same questions. The findings showed that learners scored highest when presented simultaneously with both a text and illustrations. Subsequent research conducted throughout the 1980's and 1990's also supported these findings.
