Individual can have different meanings.

When used as a noun, an individual means one person.

For example:

The main role of a school is to develop each individual's special strengths and talents.

When used as an adjective, individual can mean separate from others.

For example:

Many foods are sold in individual packages to keep foods clean and fresh.

When used as an adjective, individual can also mean special, different from others.

For example:

Even if there are many students in the class, teachers should try to relate to each child's individual needs.

The lines below are from a poem called 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' by John Donne. When Donne wrote this poem, the church bells used to ring when someone died. The main message of this poem is that although everyone is an individual, we are all connected to and responsible for the rest of mankind.
