Towards academic reading

Sherlock Holmes is a well-known fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock's unique insight into people's behavior helped him see patterns and put the missing pieces together to find out who committed the crime.

Imagine that you are Sherlock Holmes and use your own insight and intuition to solve the following crime:

The world’s largest diamond disappeared during a dinner party. Here are the findings of the police investigation:

1. The diamond disappeared before the party ended so the thief must have left early.

2. Mr. Smith met his old girlfriend at the party and spoke to her for about an hour until she left early with a headache.

3. Mrs. Smith was jealous and upset. She went outside to calm herself, and asked a waiter to watch her baby until she returned.

Using your insight into human nature, try to work out who stole the diamond.
