Towards academic readingMutually exclusive describes two things that cannot happen at the same time. An example is tossing a coin once, which can result in either heads or tails, but not both.
Imagine that you have the four cards in the picture below.
You give two of the cards to another person.
If you have the ace of hearts, then the other person cannot also have the ace of hearts.
This is an example of something that is mutually exclusive because you and the other person cannot both have the same cards at the same time.
