In order for academic texts to be politically correct in terms of language, they must be gender-neutral. This means using language that is not limited to a specific gender in order to avoid offending either men or women.

A good example of gender-neutral language is using the word 'sportsperson', instead of 'sportsman’. Because it contains the word 'man’, the word 'sportsman’ is gender-specific.
