The range of a data set is the difference between the largest and the smallest values in the set. This is very easy to calculate: If the highest score in a class was 88 and the lowest score was 48, then the range of scores between the highest and lowest scores would be 88-48 = 40. The formula for calculating a range of values for any set of scores: Range = x maximum - x minimum When we calculate the range, we look at only the largest and the smallest values. This means that the range does not tell us very much about the remaining numbers in the set.

Read this paragraph and answer the question below.

A small range or 'spread' between the highest and the lowest scores means that most people in the group got similar scores.

A large range or 'spread' between the highest and the lowest scores means that the group is heterogeneous and contains students with very different levels of ability.

If there is a wide range of ability levels in your English class, what could the teacher do to make sure that everyone learns as much as possible?

Let students work on their own, at their own pace, whenever possible.
