Towards academic reading

This exercise focuses on how irrational and unrealistic assumptions about ourselves and other people can affect our feelings and emotions.

Read this paragraph and answer the question below.

Irrational Assumptions

Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck were two psychologists who founded the cognitive behavioral therapy approach. This approach focuses on our irrational assumptions or 'negative self-talk' about ourselves, and the world we live in. Examples of irrational assumptions are 'everyone should treat me with respect' and 'things must go the way I want them to go or life is just awful'.

According to Ellis and Beck, if we become more aware of our irrational assumptions, we will be able to challenge these assumptions, and adapt more balanced, logical assumptions about ourselves and others.

Two of the sentences below are unrealistic assumptions that can make people's problems worse and can make them feel bad about themselves. Choose 2 irrational assumptions below.

'People should try to do the best they can, otherwise they will not develop their full potential.'

'I have to be perfect all of the time.'

'Everyone has to love me all of the time - otherwise life would be awful.'
