Palindromes

 

Palindromes are numbers, words, sentences or other sequences of units that can be read the same way in either direction. The sequence of numbers 12321 or the word 'civic' are examples of palindromes. If you read the sentence 'was it a rat I saw' backwards, you will see this is also a palindrome. In some sequences the spacing between the units is important, in others it is not. These strange sequences of words and numbers can be found in all languages. The first recorded example of a palindrome sequence was found written in Latin, almost two thousand years ago. In this example, the words fit into a square and can be read from any direction.
