Towards academic reading

Writers of academic texts often assume that the reader has prior knowledge of the subject being discussed. An example of this can be seen in the following paragraph.

Read the paragraph and answer the question below.

Most programs for preventing drug abuse are designed to target students in schools, with the greatest emphasis on teenagers in junior high school. The reasons for targeting students in schools are obvious and straightforward. Consequently, most of the research on preventing drug abuse has involved the testing of programs in schools.

“The reasons for targeting school-based drug abuse prevention are obvious and straightforward”.

This sentence shows that the writer assumes the readers already know why many schools have programs to prevent drug abuse. But these reasons may not be as obvious as the writer thinks they are.

See if you can identify some reasons for using schools in programs to prevent drug abuse.
