Maximize comes from the word maximum and means to make something as big as possible in order to get the most possible benefit or profit from it.

For example:

The main purpose of school is to help students maximize their learning potential.

Your computer has a little button that is circled in the picture below. This is called the 'maximize' button because it makes what you are looking at as big as possible.
