Definition comes from define which means to explain what something means.

A good definition is precise, and has two parts: It tells us what category or class something belongs to, and what are its main characteristics or what it does. 

For example:

Baseball is a sport played by two teams of nine players who try to hit a ball with a bat to score more points than the other team. 

A thermometer is an instrument for measuring temperature.
